Tamara L. McMillan is the Chief Empowerment Officer of McMillan Empowerment Enterprise based in Buffalo, New York. She is a keynote, inspirational, and platform speaker, and workshop presenter. She’s currently the Associate Director for Leadership at the State University of New York College at Buffalo.
She started her career in corporate America working for great organizations like Equifax, Ingram Micro, and Verizon. Even after receiving many awards and certifications, she still felt empty and needed a change. So in August of 2002, Tamara began her career in higher education as a mentor for the Educational Opportunity Program at Erie Community College in Buffalo, New York. Then on May 12, 2003, she accepted a position as the Student Employment Coordinator at the State University of New York College at Buffalo. Where her primary functions included critiquing resumes and cover letters, conducting workshops and classroom presentations on resume and cover letter writing, interviewing skills and choosing a major. Tamara has presented at regional conferences on topics surrounding Networking and Effective Resumes and Cover Letters. She is also qualified in the Myers Briggs Type Indicator and Strong Interest Inventory. Still feeling like something was missing in her career; she made an ambitious move and took a position as a Senior Sales Representative with GlaxoSmithKline in 2005. Her responsibilities included calling on Primary Care, and General Family Physicians, Health Care Providers and Urologists. Charged with discussing new medications and their indications, efficacy, safety and which patient types are best suited for certain medicines. She was also a part of the company’s Diversity Committee and assisted the local District Sales Managers in identifying talented candidates. Eventually, the newness and the prestige of wining and dining physicians wore off to her surprise.
Finally getting the hint Tamara realized that mentally, emotionally and spiritually it was time to do what she was born to do…speak! McMillan Empowerment Enterprise was created to be her vehicle to share her trials and tribulations. She wants to empower all people especially women the way her family and friends empowered her. In a effort to motivate, energize and empower women, she has spoken to the following organizations: The Urban League, Young Woman’s Forum, Girl Scouts, Women United, Albion State Correctional Facility, Boys and Girls Club, Homespace, EveryWoman Opportunity, Upward Bound, Science Technology and Entry Program (S.T.E.P.), HSBC bank and the Girls Sports Foundation to name a few.
Tamara attended the State University of New York College at Buffalo, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science. Returning to her alma mater, she graduated Summa cum Laude earning a Master of Science degree in Student Personnel Administration. Currently, Tamara is working on a certificate of Advanced Studies in Creative Studies and Facilitation. She is also a graduate of the United Way Board Governance Program, an in-depth training program offered to women on the importance of being effective board members. Tamara will be serving her sixth year as a Board Member with Buffalo PreNatal-PeriNatal Network this fall. She just completed a two year term as Chair for the Program Committee in the summer of 2008.
